Job description templates for remote roles
Here are 8 ready-to-paste job descriptions for remote roles: virtual assistant, customer support agent, bookkeeper, digital marketer, social media manager, graphic designer, web developer and software developer. Fill in the brackets, cut what doesn't apply, and keep the "How to apply" task, because it does most of your first-round screening for you.
Adapting a job description for remote hiring
A remote job ad has to answer things an office ad never needs to: which hours overlap, how the team talks, and which tools the new hire will work in all day. Leave those out and your first calls go to logistics instead of skills.
- Time zone: write the overlap as a fixed window in your time zone, e.g. "9:00 to 13:00 Eastern, Monday to Friday." "Flexible hours" attracts people who assumed any hours would do.
- Async tools: name what they'll use every day, like Slack, Google Workspace and your task tracker. People who know them will say so, and you can ask the rest how they pick up a new tool.
- Writing: say plainly that most communication is written. In a remote role, that one line filters better than a list of degrees.

How to apply
- Begin your message with "Rollback". In under 150 words: a release went out an hour ago and errors are climbing, but you're not sure your change caused it. What do you do in the first 15 minutes? Add a link to code you wrote (a repo, a pull request or a sample) and say what you'd improve in it.
The "apply with this word" trick
Put one instruction in the ad: start the reply with a specific word, or use a set subject line. Applicants who skip it didn't read the ad, and a remote hire who doesn't read instructions will cost you hours later.
Every template below pairs the word with a short scenario question about the job. You get two filters for the price of one: who read the ad, and how they think and write. A good answer is specific to the scenario. A copy-paste applicant sends the same cover letter they sent to everyone else.
Sort what comes in into three piles: followed the instruction and answered well, followed it with a weak answer, ignored it. Read the first pile first, and only open the second if you need more people.
Say there's a paid test task
Add one line to the ad: "Shortlisted applicants complete a short paid test task." Serious candidates see a fair, concrete next step. People sending the same application to every ad they find usually don't bother.
It also means nobody is surprised when the task arrives. The interview questions page has a test task for each of these 8 roles, with how long it should take.
Filling in the brackets
- [Company] and [what you do]: one plain sentence a stranger would understand. Skip the mission statement.
- [customers] and [market]: who buys from you and where, e.g. "dental clinics in the US Midwest." It tells applicants whose accents, holidays and business hours they'll be working around.
- [hours per week]: one number. If you're not sure yet, start lower and add hours once the work is proven.
- [rate range]: a range, never "competitive." Pull it from the pay pages on this site for the role and the country you're hiring in.
- Tool placeholders like [helpdesk tool] or [accounting software]: name what you actually use. If you're switching soon, name both.
- Lines that don't apply: delete them. A short ad with honest must-haves gets better applicants than a wish list.
FAQ
What should a remote job description include?
The role in one line, what the business does, 6 to 8 responsibilities, a short must-have list, the schedule with exact overlap hours, the pay range and one clear instruction for applying. Everything else is optional.
Should I put the pay range in a remote job ad?
Yes. Applicants can see right away whether the role works for them, so your calls go to people who can say yes. The pay pages on this site list current ranges by role and country.
How do I stop getting copy-paste applications?
Make the application instruction impossible to miss, keep the required answer short, and say that applications without it won't be read. Then actually skip the ones that ignore it, even when the resume looks strong. Someone who skips the one instruction in an ad will skip instructions at work too.
Can one job description cover a VA who does admin and social media?
Yes, if you split the responsibilities into two clear blocks and say how the hours divide, e.g. "about two-thirds admin, one-third social." Hybrid ads draw mixed applicants, so aim the how-to-apply question at the half that matters most to you.
